Survey reveals: Most people say they'd pay for legal downloads.

Hi everyone,

I came across this article today and thought I would share it with everyone in this group:

http://www.news.com.au/technology/download-culture/internet-pirates-say-theyd-pay-for-legal-downloads/story-fn58oolp-1225863187697

“MOST people who illegally download movies, music and TV shows would pay for them if there was a cheap and legal service as convenient as file-sharing tools like BitTorrent.

That's the finding of the most comprehensive look yet at people who illegally download TV shows, movies and music in Australia, conducted by news.com.au and market research firm CoreData.

More respondents said they turned to illegal downloads because they were convenient than because they were free, when it came to all three types of media covered by the survey — TV shows, movies and music.

THE most popular prices for legal downloads chosen by respondents were $1 per TV show, $2 per movie and 50c per music track.

People aren't just looking for a free ride. They're living in the modern world and expecting business models to keep up with them," he said.”

We welcome the studio's to discuss this further and hope to proactively work together to turn people's desires into a fully functioning viable solution for all parties involved.

151,000,000 searches for the word TORRENT via Google Search in February 2010.

Hi everyone,
I came across this information today whilst conducting some research, and thought I would share it with everyone in this group.

I’ve discovered that in February 2010 alone, there have been 151,000,000 searches for the word TORRENT via Google Search.

You can replicate this result by performing the following steps:

1. Click here: https://adwords.google.com.au/select/KeywordToolExternal
2. Type in the keyword: torrent
3. Leave “Use synonyms” ticked
4. Click “Get keyword ideas”

Now, I highly doubt that the bulk of the search for “Torrent” would be related to water torrents or anything like that, I’d say it is safe to conclude that people are heavily searching for Torrent files to download.

Also, keep in mind that the results from this only indicate the number of times it has been searched via Google Search; it certainly doesn’t count the unknown number using different search engines or going directly via Torrent index websites.

Has anyone come up with any other statistics that demonstrates the overall Torrent user numbers, I’d be most interested in seeing this information.

In search for greener solutions.

Hi everyone,

We recently came across this article regarding the high environmental impact associated with DVD/CD manufacturing:

http://digitalsensei.wordpress.com/

It's a very interesting read to say the least. The statistics presented in the article are quite mind boggling. Is it time for Hollywood to strongly consider this when deciding how to distribute their wonderful inventory of movies and TV shows? Are Hollywood even considering the impact they have on a daily basis?

We remain hopeful that word gets out that secure, monetizable digital distribution over P2P and BitTorrent networks is they way to go.

As usual, we welcome any indepth discussions the Movie and TV Studio's would like to have on the subject.

End of the World as Hollywood Knows It

Hi everyone,

We recently came across this article, written by Greg Sandoval, Cnet's Media Maverick. It has been addressed to some initeresting parties and clearly outlines the problems faced by the industry. Please have a read as it is quite interesting indeed.

To: Charlize Theron, Hugh Jackman, Seth Rogen, Tina Fey, Steven Spielberg, Michael Mann, every actor, actress, screenwriter, costumer, best boy, cameraman, set designer, makeup artist, and agent--plus anyone else who makes their living in the film industry.

From: Greg Sandoval, CNET media reporter and film fan.

Re: Your livelihood

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-10378654-261.html

"Cut your spending. Save your money. Many of the revenue streams that have gushed into your industry for decades, some for nearly a century, are about to dry up. This will likely mean a period of belt tightening like you've never seen before.

The end is coming for DVDs, traditional movie rentals, and yes, much of your cable money will likely disappear.

Over the past five days I've been in Los Angeles talking to entertainment attorneys, studio executives, and some of the tech vendors who do business with the studios. I've been covering the sector three years now and I've never seen people in the film industry so dejected. DVD sales are falling, the number of upcoming film releases is expected to drop. Some big shots have even acknowledged the bleak situation in public. The past weekend, at a conference on the USC campus, Disney CEO Bob Iger said the "business model that formed the motion picture business...is changing profoundly before our eyes."

Iger warned that studios must make profound changes, "or you will no longer have a business."

At Hyper MP, we have known for a while that the film industry is in trouble, and of course its very possible that the recent economic downturn is also a contributing factor to video downloads being on the increase. We are thankful to Greg for insights that validate our previous posts.

As usual, we welcome any indepth discussions the Movie and TV Studio's would like to have on the subject.

Paramount Pictures describes the piracy process to the FCC

Hi everyone,

We recently came across this article, in which Paramount Pictures provides a detailed description of how video piracy occurs on the Internet.

http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/09/23/paramount-exec-lectures-poorly-on-piracy-at-public-fcc-policy-workshop/

It's interesting to finally see the major players actively discussing the growing issue. Of course, its now a case of seeing what proactive measures they decide to take.

Our stance here at Hyper MP is that monetization really is the only way to suppress the losses in revenue that content owners are encountering on a daily basis. So we welcome the studios to commence discussions about embracing Hyper MP as a valid business model for their needs. Afterall, we are here to help.

The Movie Studios Have A Great Idea To Ramp Up Piracy

Hi everyone,

We've come across this article recently that describes how the major studios are readjusting their revenue streams:

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/08/14/the-movie-studios-have-a-great-idea-to-ramp-up-piracy-and-blockbuster-wants-to-help/

"The studios are starting to rally around a horrible new idea: Keeping new releases out of Redbox and more importantly, Netflix for 30 days. Let me repeat that: They think Netflix shouldn’t be able to ship many new movies to you until 30 days after they’re released on DVD.

Now, this doesn’t appear to be set in stone yet for Netflix, as the studios are said to be currently negotiating this with the company, but it is what the studios want. And the strategy is going forward with Redbox, which recently filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox over the same issue. And now, with Universal and Warner Brothers getting on board, another lawsuit seems likely.

If the studios are allowing some places like Blockbuster stores to rent movies on day one, but limit Netflix from doing the same, how many of the millions of Netflix users are going to drive to a Blockbuster store to get that movie? Some certainly will, but a lot will also turn to the web and simply download the movie. And some who have never done that before will learn how to get around such a ridiculous restriction."

At Hyper MP, we can clearly see more changes are being introduced by the studios to help capitalise on older business models, with the hope of retaining profits levels at a maximum. Unfortunately, with video piracy increasing everyday, ultimately we can see their bottom line being effected in ways they cannot see. We certainly do welcome the engamement with the studio's on how they can easily monetize this phenonemal human behaviour and appetite for online video access.

Digital Pirates Winning Battle With Studios

Hi everyone,

We've come across this article recently that describes how piracy is causing a major dent in Hollywood's revenue stream:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/05/business/media/05piracy.html?_r=2&ref=business

"The Motion Picture Association of America says that illegal downloads and streams are now responsible for about 40 percent of the revenue the industry loses annually as a result of piracy."

"“It is becoming, among some demographics, a very mainstream behaviour,” said Eric Garland, the chief executive of BigChampagne."

"With so much pirated material online, Hollywood is turning to technological solutions. Perhaps most important, media companies are learning from the music industry’s mistakes and trying to avert broader adoption of piracy techniques. The No. 1 lesson: provide the video on the platform that users want it."

At Hyper MP, we've watched this trend developing consistently and exponentially over the past 3 years or so. Therefore, our solution is more viable today (and clearly over the years to come). We certainly do welcome the studios to meet with us to discuss in depth how we can salvage any future losses, demostrate a fully functioning beta version of the software, and turn this problem of theirs into a solid, prosperous business solution.

The Digital Hollywood experience.

Hi everyone,

We have just come back from our third visit to the Digital Hollywood conference in Los Angeles. This conference certainly had a different feel about it. Digital Media, or most importantly, monetizing media assets on the Internet has become the hottest topic surrounding the industry. We have met many content owners who are interested in how Hyper MP can help protect and monetize their assets online.

The Internet advertising world continues to strengthen their relationships with advertisers and consumers. They are always finding ways of seamlessly reaching the consumer. More emphasis has been placed on protecting user's privacy, and improving targeting. Obviously this is most important. The trick has always been about finding an intelligent way of protecting the user, and at the same time, providing relevant advertising to maximise effect and give the user a more tailored and relevant experience. Hyper MP is very interested in how this unfolds. We are currently looking for the best Advertising Network to work with in order to get the best experience possible for all parties.

Fritz Attaway from the MPAA made an interesting comment during this conference. He stated that the motion picture studios need to look at releasing their video assets to the Internet earlier. This has by far been the biggest and most important statement to come out of the Digital Hollywood conference. It suggests that on the Internet, the consumer is king, and that there has to be a way to appeal and monetize this ever growing market. We certainly welcome the MPAA to discuss further how we can help the studios get to this stage of their evolution.

Content rights management, also referred to as the dirty word DRM played a big part in this conference. It's interesting to see what DRM means to different people. To the consumer, DRM means chains and shackles, to the content owner, it means business logic and monetization. To HyperMP, it simply means protection. We prefer to secure content to keep content owners safe and comfortable, and leave it at that. The rest of the intelligence within the HyperMP technology is based around consumer and advertiser needs and expectation. By pairing the two together, we organically achieve monetization.

As Hyper MP continues its journey, we are finding more acceptance to our offering. We believe that the correct alliances and partnerships will create a solid foundation to making this solution function online. We should always been mindful that the creative efforts of film and television shows need to be fairly rewarded. Hollywood is the dream factory of the world, and together as a global community we can keep the dreams alive.

Monetizing P2P downloads is easy with the Hyper MP Virtual TV Network

Hi everyone,

With the recent success of the trial run of the Hyper MP Virtual TV Network across the BitTorrent portals, we are very excited to report that monetizing video content through P2P networks is easy.

We have also discovered that web portals such as Mininova are reporting a rapidly increasing user base, and an increase in activity of video download requests coming from their sites.
In a recent entry on the Mininova blog, they have reported to have reached the 4 billion download mark. They anticipate to reach the 8 billion mark by the end of this year. Therefore, video assets are clearly being shared, however, it is not being monetized. The truth is that this is a growing market which is yet an untapped source of revenue.

Please let us know if your interested in more information on how to monetize your video assets on open P2P networks.

Monetize P2P Networks - today

Hi everyone,

Thank you to all those who have contributed to the beta demonstration of our software. The trial run has so far been quite successful.

We have taken the time to analyse what has been offered online. The results have pointed to one very substantial point, P2P distributed video can be monetized.

This really gravitates to Anne Sweeny's comment that "Piracy is a business model". We have clearly demonstrated that Anne is correct. Our technology and analytics is proof of this very point.

Therefore, we invite all the major TV networks and film studios to discuss with us what our findings mean to their business, and how we can forge mutually beneficial relationships, leveraging from what will soon become a hyper experience for everyone.

The Hyper MP Virtual Television Network is here.

Hi everyone,

We are very excited about our public beta demonstration of the Hyper MP Solution. The interesting part about this release is our ability to demonstrate the virtualisation of the television network.

Effectively this means that we are able to take all the best functions of broadcast TV, and fuse it with the best parts of Internet delivery, and feedback systems. The result is that any television network on the planet today (free to air or subscriber based) can now be ported into the Internet.

As we further develop our technology, traditional broadcasters will all be able to reap direct benefits of Hyper MP from a technology and business point of view. Viewers will also benefit by knowing that the content is legitimate (not pirated).

We welcome all broadcasters and content license holders to view a sample of our technology, and to discuss further how we can be of benefit to their business.

A public demo of our solution is now available for you to download and share.

Chernin calls for more risk-taking

At Hyper MP, we've been suggesting that media companies should be embracing innovative technology. Now, in an open statement from Peter Cherin, the head of Fox, we may start to actually see this happening.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117971983.html?categoryId=19&cs=1

The writing is finally on the wall.
We invite Peter to have a discussion with us on this very topic, and learn something interesting about what we are aiming to achieve with our software.

To all Online Media Companies, Advertisers and Beta testers.

Our aim is to make Internet Video more accessible, and monetizable, using our software engine.

The advertising and media agencies have clearly stated their intention to pour more advertising revenue into the Internet (as reported by the Wall Street Jounal on Friday, May 25, 2007 http://online.wsj.com/article/SB118005411110914183.html?mod=dist_smartbrief). We feel that our Beta testers should also benefit from this.

As we now enter the vibrant world of Internet Video, it should be noted that monetizing video can be realised in multiple ways. By taking the best aspects of broadcast TV and fusing it with the best parts of current and future web advertising, Hyper MP has managed to build many sustainable business models from the one innovative software engine.

The result being a great rewarding experience for the global community. It's a Web 2.0 system that will pay Beta testers to watch videos in all forms, irrespective of where the video content comes from. The engine is also designed to reward video content providers during this Beta trial.
